Family-run studio company with 60+ sound stages in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island
Broadway Stages rents sound stages, support space, filming locations and lighting and grip equipment to film, television, music video and commercial productions from its base on Meserole Avenue in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Tony Argento founded the company in 1983 by turning a run-down movie theater on Broadway in Astoria, Queens, into a soundstage, and according to the company, commercials and music videos were shot there for Aretha Franklin, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Whitney Houston, Will Smith and others. It then built stages in Greenpoint and moved into film and television. The family-owned business manages more than four million square feet with over 60 soundstages in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island and more than 16 acres of parking. According to Broadway Stages, Blue Bloods filmed all 14 seasons and The Good Wife all seven at its facilities, Evil filmed all four seasons at its Kingsland Avenue stages, and Orange Is the New Black used its Staten Island campus.
Stages
- Brooklyn: dozens of stages from about 3,750 to 21,000 square feet with heights up to 40 feet, the largest being Stages 9, 11, 19, 20 and 23 at roughly 19,000 to 21,000 square feet.
- Queens: the Cooper and Irving stages, including the 38,541-square-foot Cooper Stage 9 and the 20,572-square-foot Irving B.
- Staten Island: an affiliated 69-acre waterfront campus at the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility with four stages of 11,600 to 20,600 square feet, plus prison buildings, guard towers, a yard and beach and wooded areas used as locations.
Locations, support space and equipment
Support space includes production offices, construction and scenic shops, and wardrobe, props, hair and makeup and storage areas. The location inventory includes the prison, a gas terminal on Newtown Creek, a bank, a garden rooftop, a Lear jet and airplane sets. Lighting, power and grip rentals are handled in-house by Luna Lighting. Fashion, music and lifestyle magazines have also used the facilities for studio photography, per the company.
