Hollywood recording complex with four rooms built by Bill Putnam in 1961
EastWest Studios is a recording studio complex at 6000 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, Los Angeles. According to the studio, the building opened in 1933 as the Cash Is King grocery market, became Western Recorders in 1957, and was bought in 1961 by engineer Bill Putnam, who built the live rooms that are still in use. EastWest says Frank Sinatra recorded “Strangers in the Night” and “My Way” in Studio One, The Beach Boys made Pet Sounds in Studio Three and Whitney Houston recorded “I Will Always Love You” in Studio Two. The complex was later redesigned with Philippe Starck while keeping Putnam’s rooms intact, and the studio counts 205 Grammy nominations for work made here between 2012 and 2026.
