Hollywood recording complex with four rooms built by Bill Putnam in 1961

EastWest Studios is a recording studio complex at 6000 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, Los Angeles. According to the studio, the building opened in 1933 as the Cash Is King grocery market, became Western Recorders in 1957, and was bought in 1961 by engineer Bill Putnam, who built the live rooms that are still in use. EastWest says Frank Sinatra recorded “Strangers in the Night” and “My Way” in Studio One, The Beach Boys made Pet Sounds in Studio Three and Whitney Houston recorded “I Will Always Love You” in Studio Two. The complex was later redesigned with Philippe Starck while keeping Putnam’s rooms intact, and the studio counts 205 Grammy nominations for work made here between 2012 and 2026.

Studios

  • Studio One: more than 61,000 cubic feet, suited to anything from a single voice to a 70-piece orchestra, with an 80-channel Neve 8078 console, an isolation booth, a Bechstein D-280 concert grand and a private artist lounge.
  • Studio Two: a high-ceilinged rock room with a 40-channel Neve RCA custom 8028 console, drum and vocal isolation booths, a Yamaha C7 grand and a private artist lounge.
  • Studio Three: the smallest room, with a 40-channel Trident A-Range console, a Steinway B grand and a private artist lounge.
  • Studio Five: a former mix room renovated in 2013, with a 64-channel SSL 4064 G+, the largest control room in the building, natural light and a large isolation booth.

Studios One to Three run Pro Tools Ultimate with ATC300A house monitors, and Studer 827 and Ampex ATR-102 tape machines are available on request in every room.
