Universal Studios Lot

The Universal Virtual Production Stage is an LED volume stage on the Universal Studios Lot in Universal City, California, in the San Fernando Valley. NBCUniversal rents the stage, with an LED volume, a lighting package and experienced staff, for feature, episodic, alternative, commercial and streaming projects, and clients have access to the lot’s full range of production, post-production and broadcast services.

LED volume and technology

• A 3-degree curved LED wall, 31 feet by 13 feet 5 inches, built from 200 ROE Black Pearl BP2V2 panels at 2.8 mm pixel pitch.
• A 13-by-10-foot rolling LED wild wall and a 23-by-20-foot motorized LED ceiling of 60 ROE Carbon CB3 panels at 3.75 mm.
• Two Brompton Tessera SX40 processors, Sony Ocellus markerless camera tracking, a Pixera media server for playback, two Unreal Engine 4K render nodes and two on-site Unreal Engine virtual art department workstations.
• An RGB LED base lighting package, an ARRI Alexa Mini camera with wireless lens control, a J.L. Fisher Model 10 dolly, a 4K video router with LUT box, and wireless video with a quad-split multiviewer.

The stage

• 9,200 square feet, with a 100-by-92-foot floor and 29 feet to the catwalk.
• A stage entry door 17 feet 11 inches wide by 7 feet 10 inches high.
• Temperature control, sound proofing, Wi-Fi, dressing rooms, green rooms, hair and makeup suites, production offices and security.

Typical uses

Universal lists the stage as ideal for previsualization, asset testing, car process shots, talent interviews and marketing or promotional shoots.

Getting there

The Universal Studios Lot sits across the street from the Metro Universal City/Studio City station, and pedestrians enter through Gate 3. Bookings are arranged through the lot’s virtual production team.
